July 2023 Fellow's update: Amara Nwosu

Research Lead for Marie Curie Hospice Liverpool, Amara Nwosu (CF 2020), has been announced as the winner of the Culture for Innovation award of the North West Coast Research and Innovation Awards. The award was for the innovative work in the hospice which Amara is leading, to improve the delivery of palliative care research to improve patient care.

One of Amara's research posters “Caregiver views and expectations about the use of artificial hydration in the management of dying people with advanced cancer: a questionnaire study” won one of the ‘best abstract’ prizes at the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) World Congress.

He delivered a keynote talk, “Using technology, design and healthcare partnerships to research how digital information is managed after death” at the Digital Legacy Conference, which took place on 17 June during the EAPC World Congress.

July 2023 Fellow update: Steve Marshall

Steve Marshall appeared in ehospice, a global news and information resource which provides news and commentary from the world of hospices and palliative care. Steve's Fellowship is focused on developing recommendations to support children with a dying parent. In the article Steve talks about his Fellowship travels to Norway and Sweden to find out how their healthcare systems support children with seriously ill parents. Steve writes about how these countries have adopted a concept of children as ‘next-of-kin’ and how it is implemented, and the difference that this can make.

July 2023 Fellow's update: Nina Smith

Former teacher, Nina Smith (CF 2023) has appeared in a couple of media outlets this month. Nina lost her younger brother to suicide and recounts her experience and hopes for the future in the articles from InYourArea.co.uk and Leigh Observer and Skem News. Nina will be travelling to Australia and the USA to explore school-based suicide prevention strategies.

June 2023 Fellow's update: Nishtha Chugh

Online Journalist and Producer Nishtha Chugh (CF 2016) gave evidence to the All-Party Parliamentary Group Inquiry on Ethnicity Transplantations and Transfusion in June 2023. The Inquiry is examining the causes of poor health outcomes for the UK's ethnic minorities with respect to organ and stem cell donation. The APPG took an interest in Nishtha's findings from the US and Israel in particular and discussed potential lessons that could be useful for devising frameworks in the UK. Her research has officially been submitted as part of the evidence to the committee. She is also a member of the steering committee advising this Inquiry. Nishtha's report has also been mentioned in the NHSBT's 2030 Strategy report on Organ Donation and Transplantation in the country.
