Biography

I am an organiser and trade unionist, currently working at the EIS, Scotland's biggest teaching union. The main topic of my Fellowship is how to build a movement of teachers in the USA and Scotland. I am interested in this topic because I have been organising and campaigning for workers' rights since 2018.

Every child deserves a quality education in well-resourced classrooms. But the reality is that one in four children in Scotland is affected by poverty. The educational attainment gap persists between children from poorer families and better-off families. Many schools do not have the resources they need to ensure that young people can thrive.

Teachers play a vital role as leaders in their local communities. To build a society where all of Scotland's young people can thrive, schools and teachers need the funding and resources they deserve. My Fellowship is all about building a powerful, grassroots movement of teachers in the USA and Scotland, with the goal of delivering a more equitable education system for all. I hope to use the knowledge and understanding gained from my Fellowship to directly build teacher-community coalitions to influence key policymakers.
