Biography

Although retired, I am still actively involved with campaigning for the UK to retain its unique public service broadcasting structure and culture as a trustee of the Voice of the Listener & Viewer (VLV).

The legacy from my Fellowship is the television coverage of debates within the House of Commons Chamber as well as sessions in committee rooms in the Palace of Westminster and Portcullis House, which we have become accustomed to seeing on our television screens.

During 1987 I travelled to the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, where I had the opportunity to explore the facilities which these countries had installed in order to cover their respective legislatures, as well as studying the operational management of satellite news-gathering and sharing outside broadcast resources. Six weeks after I returned, our own MPs voted for the introduction of cameras. I was appointed as the BBC's Project Manager – a job which also involved finding and setting up the BBC's Westminster base.

We spoke to Churchill Fellow Antonia (Toni) Charlton about how her Fellowship helped pave the way for televising the House of Commons. Travelling to the USA, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, Toni explored how parliaments overseas managed live broadcasting. Just weeks after her return, Parliament voted to trial televised Commons debates – and Toni was appointed BBC project manager to make it happen. She reflects on how the Fellowship shaped her career and fuelled her ongoing passion for public service broadcasting.
