Formerly a community nurse and civil servant, Lindsay has worked in strategic government roles in Scotland and England. Known as one of the UK's leading experts on school food she previously served as Vice Chair of Scotland’s Poverty and Inequality Commission and as a Committee Member for the National Lottery Community Fund Scotland. In 2022 Lindsay was awarded an OBE by the late Queen Elizabeth the Second for her work in addressing children’s food insecurity in the UK. In 2023 Lindsay received an Honorary Doctorate from Glasgow Caledonian University for ‘unwavering dedication to social justice’, and more recently the Lifetime Excellence Award from the Scottish School Food awards in 2025.
Her 2014 Fellowship to nine US states was to research Innovation in Community Projects that address School Holiday Child Hunger. 'Holiday hunger' highlights child poverty in the UK, and she believed that it was being overlooked in both policy and legislation. Her Fellowship gave her valuable insights into demonstrable international policy and practice to help make the case for change across all four UK regions. It is difficult to quantify the results of her Fellowship as much of her campaigning work was done as an individual. It has led to change at UK wide policy level along with substantial government funding that has directly improved the quality of lives of our younger citizens and families.
