Biography
I am a researcher and artist working in the overlap between performance and participatory democracy. I'm interested in finding playful and disruptive ways to gather and connect strangers, and to reimagine the way we live. At times, this is explored in a paper, other times over a big communal meal, or in a theatre piece. My work is rooted in a belief that an inclusive and reflective democracy is crucial for a liveable future, and that the arts are key to creating this kind of democracy.
I'm Artistic Director of The Bare Project, a theatre and interactive arts company based in Sheffield. We are beginning work on our most ambitious project to date - the creation of a new arts and ecology space in the city, which will see a former industrial site transformed into a community forest and international artistic residency space.
My Fellowship will enable me to visit and learn from similar projects in Japan. Specifically, I will be visiting projects which transform places through arts and ecology, balance community ownership with international engagement, and explore resilience and recovery in the face of environmental disaster through the arts.
