A search for traditional skills in hand weaving
Biography
I am a handweaver and teacher of weaving, spinning and dyeing. I have a particular interest in ikat, a way of creating designs by resist-dyeing yarn before weaving. The Fellowship took me to Central Asia to study this technique before it disappeared. My Report in 1989 suggested that the Uighur culture was under threat and sadly this is now all too apparent.
At age 50 I thought adventurous travel was in my past but my Fellowship gave me an immense boost as I made a three-month solo trip, backpacking and using local buses.
Following the Fellowship I taught the techniques I learnt, ikat and others, around the UK and in my studio. I have now retired from teaching in the studio and have changed direction to work on personal projects rather than strictly commercial work. I have just completed a four-year project weaving a 2m x 4m tapestry. The initial idea was formed 35 years ago but it took retirement to give me time to indulge in this freedom.
