Biography
I am a chartered architect and sculptor with extensive experience in architectural ceramics. I propose to learn from ceramic construction techniques in countries of the Mediterranean basin that mitigate urban heat. My Fellowship project posits that the UK construction industry could use this knowledge to future proof newbuilt construction in the face of global warming.
My interest in this topic stems from the stark contrast between how high temperatures are experienced in Mediterranean buildings compared with buildings in the UK. Ceramic is prominent in both locales, yet its use addresses different climatic needs. In the face of global warming, the UK ought to re-imagine how to keep its buildings cool - and ceramics can contribute to that end.
I hold a Masters MA(RCA) in Ceramics and Glass and founded the research cluster Terra Ignis at the Architectural Association, which has recently focused on ceramic screens as mediators between the sweltering exterior and the interior comfort of the building.
