Reorganising labour: how digital unions can work
Engaging young self-employed workers in organised labour through technology

I am a British-based journalist and Director of Unhack Democracy, a human rights NGO that strengthens electoral integrity in Europe by giving citizens the tools to safeguard their own elections and protect democratic institutions from state interference. A past winner of the Wyn Harness Journalist Award, I am also a Fellow of the International State Crime Initiative and advisory board member of We Make Change, a social action social network.
Travelling to the USA just before the pandemic hit, my Fellowship explores how digital technology, combined with new forms of labour organising, can fill the void left by traditional unions to provide better support and protect self-employed, freelance and gig workers.
With Covid-19 exacerbating existing trends around the future of work, the issues my Fellowship sought to address, from the shift to 'hybrid' working and the rise of employee activism to the emergence of a digital-led worker ownership model, are more pressing and relevant than ever. That is why I am grateful for the opportunity and support provided by the Churchill Fellowship to continue to evolve and develop my findings.
