Biography

My Fellowship is about exploring the relationship between mobile phone usage, the internet and social media, and young people's mental health. My professional background is within the youth sector and I now work as a life coach and a consultant to social impact organisations. I am also a qualified teacher, a Fellow of the RSA and I host the podcast Childhood Heroes, which explores how childhood has changed over a generation.

Throughout my career, I have become increasingly concerned by the decline in young people's mental health and the simultaneous increase in mobile phone and social media usage by children. I hear of so many parents (who are often grappling with their own internet addiction) who are afraid and unsure of how to guide their children through online experiences that they never had as a child or teenager. Information and guidance is out there, but it is sporadic and often fear-mongering.

I hope that my research will identify good practice so that I can help upskill and empower young people and parents to take charge of their relationships with their phones and improve their mental health.
