Biography
I became a lawyer following my childhood experience of having a family member arrested. I've worked with and for incarcerated women and girls for over 15 years in a variety of contexts, including founding Women Beyond Walls Ð a movement-building platform to end the over-incarceration of women and girls worldwide.
Globally, the rate of women's incarceration is growing faster than that of men. In the UK, there are twice as many women in prison than there were almost three decades ago. Research shows that imprisonment has a devastating impact on women and their families. However, there are global alternatives that support women in contact with the law with community solutions.
During my Fellowship, I will document strategies and projects that help to reduce the incarceration of women and girls, which will support reform efforts in the UK. In particular, I will focus on projects led by women with lived experience of the justice system who are often overlooked. My goal is to bring more attention to this important but often neglected issue so as to change the narrative, and to encourage policy reform and more resourcing of such strategies.
