Biography
I run a community supported agriculture (CSA) farm on Dartmoor in Devon growing organic vegetables, fruits and flowers for 150 local households. My Fellowship will research the contrast in growth of the CSA model across the USA and the UK over the past 30 years to evaluate opportunities and challenges for the CSA movement in the UK.
I am passionate about the potential of CSA and subscription farming to deliver food sovereignty, environmental public goods and community resilience from the ground up. Having founded and managed a CSA farm for the past 12 years, I have a unique insight into the practical workings of the model, the contribution it can make to local food economies and many of the challenges it faces in scaling-up.
I hope my Fellowship can contribute valuable insights to the emerging UK CSA community to identify opportunities for growth as well as common obstacles and how these may be overcome. Ultimately I would like to see greater support for CSA farms to deliver fresh, seasonal and nutritious food, at an affordable price, to local communities across the UK.
