Identifying new ways to deliver effective rural policing

I am a police inspector based in Devon and Cornwall. I live on the edge of Dartmoor and have policed within rural communities for much of my career. I am passionate about the countryside and over recent years I have seen how changes to policing have impacted on rural communities.
The purpose of my Fellowship is to visit different locations to identify what approaches to policing have been effective elsewhere and see how positive methods could be adopted in the UK. I have chosen New Zealand as I know there has been a real focus on rural policing and I want to understand how changes have been received by both police and local communities. Traditionally, British policing has looked to itself or other westernised countries for solutions. By visiting Namibia I am hoping to learn how other cultures keep rural communities safe and see what ideas could be adapted for use in the UK.
