Biography

I am a police sergeant based in Derbyshire. I am passionate about the welfare of my colleagues and my Fellowship is about preventing suicide among police officers.

More police die through suicide than in the line of duty. It is estimated that one in four UK police officers have considered suicide. My Fellowship will research the preventative measures taken in different law enforcement organisations in Canada, where regional reductions have been achieved in the amount of officers lost through suicide. I aim to bring any learning opportunities back to my own organisation.

As a result of my desire to influence change in this area, I led a project to introduce Trauma Risk Management (TRiM) in my previous police force. TRiM is a peer-led system used to identify and support those affected by a traumatic event. This will sadly always be of personal importance to me, and somewhat of a calling. I lost a friend and colleague through suicide and I hope to use the sadness and regret I have following this loss to propel me to find the opportunities for change. I hope to contribute to a more preventative and proactive approach to the wellbeing of police officers.
